What’s behind the change?
Use of e-books and e-audiobooks has risen sharply over the last few years, and the average cost of a digital format is at least twice the cost for a physical copy. However, Hoopla uses a cost-per-borrow pricing model. It charges the library a fee every time a patron borrows an e-book, audiobook, video or music, regardless of whether the patron reads or listens to the material. The fees range from $0.29 to $3.90 per checkout depending on the title and format. The average cost per checkout is $2.22.
We spend approximately 29% of our overall Operating budget on digital resources. Our entire collection budget is $171,100 and $50,000 is directed toward the digital offerings from Libby and Kanopy. Hoopla is funded separately by Teton County Library Foundation & Friends.
When to choose Libby over Hoopla
We offer both Libby and Hoopla to patrons because they don't carry all the same titles--by offering both, you get a more complete digital collection to choose from. Because of Libby’s pricing model, we suggest that if an item is available on both Libby and Hoopla, you check out from Libby first (which may require waiting if the title is checked out), but we understand that they may not both carry the title you seek and that you may need to use Hoopla.
