1. What does the Library do with donated books?

1. Donations provide us with many books for the Library’s collection. A Library staff person carefully examines all donated items and selects those that fill gaps in our collection. Any books that we choose to add to the collections must also meet our regular selections criteria as outlined in our Collection Development Policy. 

2. Where does my book go if you don’t add it to the Library’s collection?

Sometimes the donated item doesn’t meet the Library’s collection development criteria. Perhaps we already have enough copies of the donated title, or enough information of the subject, or it may not meet the information needs of our community. If the Library can’t use the item, it gets passed along to the Teton County Library Friends. 

Book Nook

The Friends sort the items and put them into the Friends Book Nook in the library lobby. Friends’ mission is to get as many books as possible into as many hands as possible for as little money as possible. 

Donated to the Community

Donated items not added to the collection or to the Book Nook are passed on to the community.

3. Can I get a receipt for the books I donate?

Library Main Desk staff will be happy to give you a receipt for the number of items donated and the date of the donation. However, we are unable to quote a value for donated items. 

4. What kinds of items does the Library like to receive?

Most importantly, we like to receive current titles in excellent condition. 

These are the material we love to get:

• CDs
• Children’s titles in good condition
• Current and former bestsellers in excellent condition, both fiction and nonfiction.
• Current text books
• DVDs
• Fiction paperbacks in like-new condition
• Hardback classics in excellent condition
• Historical materials related to Wyoming and Jackson Hole

5. What items can the Library not accept as donations?

We are not able to accept:

• Electronics of any kind
• Encyclopedias
• Items in poor condition with torn pages, broken bindings, highlighted text, wet or mildew
• Magazines, including National Geographic
• Out-of-date nonfiction, especially travel guides or technology
• Outdated textbooks
• Reader’s Digest condensed books
• VHS tapes and cassette tapes

Teton County Recycling

Teton County Recycling accepts magazines, hardcover books, and paperbacks.

6. What is the difference between the Friends and the Foundation?

The most important role of Teton County Library Friends is to support the Library through volunteerism and advocacy. The main focus of the Teton County Library Foundation is to raise money from donors like you to make possible Library enrichments such as the following:

• Audio and downloadable materials
• Page to the Podium Author Presentations
• Speakers, Programs, and Multicultural Events
• VITA Free Tax Preparation Assistance
• Summer Reading Programs
