Alta Branch Library Design

Thursday, December 18th, 2008
I’m delighted to let you know that the Library Board approved the overall design schematics for the new Alta Branch Library at its board meeting yesterday in Alta.  There’s a lovely reading area in the southeast corner with nearly perfect views of the Tetons to the east.  A separate children’s area is surrounded by low book stacks and has southern windows looking out to a future children’s garden.  A welcoming porch on the west side will be the place to leave skis, bikes and strollers.  The exterior reflects many of the neighboring buildings.  For example, the board and batten siding mirrors that of the Alta Elementary School.  And the rock work hints at the stone found in St. Francis church next door.  All-in-all, I believe you will be proud to have the new Alta Branch Library as a hallmark of the Alta community.
You can view a detailed copy of the architect’s packet at the Alta Branch Bookmobile and the main library in Jackson.  That packet includes interior and exterior renderings.  I’m looking to have pictures on our website soon.
The Library Board is still taking comments on the design and the Alta Facilities Team is still working with the Design/Build Team to fine tune the details of the building.  I encourage you to send your comments to me as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Design/Build Team is polishing the numbers for the cost estimates to build the library. On January 5, the library will officially request approval from the Town-County Joint Information Meeting to apply for the County’s Consensus Block Grant Funds through the State Land Investment Board.  The Town and County have given approval in principle; now we need official approval.
The library is on track to meet its target opening day in December 2009.  I hope you are as excited as I am about the new Alta Branch Library.  I believe it will be a real complement to the heart of the Alta community.Deb
