  • teens need a separate space so they can be themselves, listen to music, have cool furniture, work in groups

bob commented on 10/23  at  10:55 AM

  • I want the teens to be located far away from the reading room.

Jane commented on 10/29  at  10:38 AM

  • I see a need for teens to have separate rooms they can use for impromptu discussions and group work. I know you have conference rooms that can be reserved, but teens often don’t plan and organize their groups that far ahead. Thanks!

Juli commented on 10/29  at  10:43 AM

  • Seperate teen friendly space for teens with soundproof glass.  It’s unnatural for teens to be quiet.  Let’s meet their needs instead of dictating how the need to “behave” at the library.  Encourage them to gather to work on school projects or simply socialize.  Let the public see teens think the library is a cool place to be.

the quiet one commented on 11/02  at  12:03 PM

  • some teens are very quiet and like to have silence, unlike others.
I think the teen place shouldn’t be a place for partying. Its a library, for Pete’s sake!! Its for reading, and silence.

ben commented on 11/05  at  04:09 PM

  • give the teens their own space—make it cool enough that they want to use it.  they don’t have many choices to hang out in jackson. i like them coming to the library—it’s better than getting into trouble.

From paper comment form commented on 11/06  at  10:43 AM

  • The children are very noisy after school hours.  It is almost impossible to read in a quiet area.  Most all libraries demand quietness.  This has never been controlled.  It’s time for a change.  I have heard this comment many times.

  • More space maybe, a place we could be a little bit louder….Books!

From paper comment form commented on 11/06  at  10:55 AM

  • Something cool to do.  I don’t know what, but something we can do here in the teen space when we don’t want to do homework.

From paper comment form commented on 11/06  at  03:43 PM

  • Have a room that is ONLY for teens (Grades 6-12) that is a lounge that has games like Wii, 1-3 computers, etc.

  • I would love to see our Library move into a much needed leadership position in our community when it comes to providing a safe and special place where teens can come together - not only to be entertained by materials, but where they can also find fellowship, purpose and guidance.

A Teen Center could provide a place for special presentations and discussion panels pertinent to everyday life of teens….a place to listen to music (headphones) and meet with friends; a place to find help with homework (volutneer tutors, special internet programs); a quiet place to study, if that is not possible at home, etc.  I see so many possibilities….(My son says teens get into trouble because they are “bored, have nowhere to go, and can’t afford most of the sports and activities” available in our area.) Until a YMCA comes to town, this might be a great help to our local youth.

From paper comment form commented on 11/06  at  06:20 PM

  • More tables, fun furniture and board games.

Jim commented on 11/07  at  06:52 AM

  • I’d like to see a separate Teen/Children’s area closed off from the rest of the library, or far from quiet areas.  Teens still need supervision, so using glass walls would be a good idea.  It would make it easier to supervise, without staff having to be too intrusive.

It would be nice to have Children’s and Teen Study rooms in the Children’s dept. for tutors, people studying, or for small groups.  These should have glass walls like the library in Cheyenne.

Glenn commented on 11/07  at  11:47 AM

  • Teens need a place they can retreat to and call their own. The rest of the library should continue to welcome them too. Something fun and relevant—what about letting the teens figure out the furniture and finishes in their space?

Joey commented on 11/08  at  04:14 PM

  • I don’t think the teens who come to the library mean to be disruptive, they’re just being teens (talkative, flirtateous, laughing).  Give them their own space where they can be themselves.  It’s good to see them at the library.

  • Need a separate space for teens, not next to reading room.  The nook by the reading room puts them right in the middle of the library so if they are socializing then they disturb everybody.

  • Separate space with closed doors.  Gaming machines & music.

Alec commented on 11/11  at  06:50 AM

  • Make sure teens have quiet rooms, too.  a lot of us come to the library to do our homework after school.  We need places to plug in our laptops and spread out our work.

  • We need enough separate center so that the whole library is not disrupted when teens get out of school and library becomes a latch-key place for kids everyday after school.  Separate them and their noise/energy.

From paper comment form commented on 11/12  at  08:37 AM

From paper comment form commented on 11/13  at  08:53 AM

  • Good idea to have a space where teens can hang out.  It’s a time when kids can get “lost.“

From paper comment form commented on 11/13  at  01:52 PM

  • I was the one who started the group that plays cards in the library on Tuesdays and Thursday.  It would be helpful to have a larger room to accommodate more than 8 people.  And while we do try to keep quiet, on occassion we can get a little loud, and a room with some sound proofing built into it would help.

From paper comment form commented on 11/14  at  08:59 AM

  • Many latino teens take care of younger siblings, so there needs to be a place where they can both be together. A separate teen area would not work, so the areas would need to be connected somehow, maybe have a place in between where both kids and teens can be together.

from paper comment commented on 11/15  at  02:41 PM

  • I work for the Teton Mentor Project in the middle school.  Many of our participants could use after school homework help/support.  I know they would love a place aside from school to do homework - is this a possibility?

Ben Brettell commented on 11/18  at  04:56 PM

  • As someone who works with teens, one of the most common things I hear from them is the lack of things to do and places to hang out.  This town needs to work on the proactive side of things and try to accommodate this desire of teens to spend time together and socialize in a positive and safe environment.  If the library is willing to take that on I would be both pleased and impressed.  All too often we focus on what kids are doing wrong instead of what we can do to help them do right.  The library is already, in a lot of respects, an after school hang out.  To dedicate a space solely for them would: 1. encourage more young people to choose the library over “just driving around”, etc. and 2. allow all the other users to utilize the library without disruptions from teens.  Obviously safety and supervision will have to be addressed, but the fact that we are even having this dialogue is a huge step.

  • The previous comments are so great and clearly give the architect and the library staff some direction. The need for a larger, more dynamic teen area is clear. a place where teens can be teens and not be shushed or condemned for who they are. The space clearly needs to be flexible for future changes in technology and the need for varied use.
The library would be sainted if they took on the decade old community issue of a “teen center”, perhaps it does not have to be a “center” but it could be an amazing opportunity to create something truly special and unique response to our community and this long suffering segment of Jackson. Don’t hold back here, these kids are the future of our town, our state.

  • I think that a lot of different things make teens interested in hanging out.  When a space has a lot to do, you don’t get bored.  We should have a rockwall! We could have a Wii or playstation in the teen room!  We should have a really big, fun teen space.  (Please don’t make it adult practical!)

  • A sound proof music room.

From High School commented on 11/21  at  08:23 PM

  • If it was bigger, maybe had computers.  More bean bags.  More computers in the teen space would be better.  You should have fun things for teens like a dinosaur and a ball pit.

  • We need our space to study and relax.  Get something crazy like a flat screen or ball pit or a Wii.  Mini rock wall.  Tree house with slide into ball pit.  I am serious.  This is not funny.  Take this seriously.

  • -Make it easily accessable
-Teens only! No little kids or adults should be allowed in area except the occasional librarian.

  • The present young adult area was something of an afterthought in the design of the facility, and it has never been adequate - especially in light of the ambitious and successful young adult programming the Library has undertaken.  The kids need more space for reading, studying, using computers, hanging out and chatting with each other.  The area needs to be somewhat isolated because it’s bound to be a little noisy, and having their own space would undoubtedly increase comfort, security, and usage by young adults.
