Tough as Nails Outside, Squishy Marshmallow Inside

Here's one of the things I love best about libraries -- there are all these amazing books, CDs and DVDs for anyone to check out any time for FREE! The next best thing is that we have this wonderful honor system where we trust people to take books home and to bring them back for others to use. Where else is there such a fantastic opportunity for people?

Freedom For Speech

Two recent events -- a book challenge and a divisive Fourth of July keynote speaker -- stirred my juices around the topic of our country's Constitution and the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights. As a librarian, I have an intense commitment to supporting each and every person's freedom for speech. It's an interesting place to be because I sometimes end up defending people I don't necessarily agree with, mainly because I believe in their right to their opinion and their right to express it.
